Boundary Adaptation in Grid Generation for CFD Analysis of Screw Compressors

چکیده
This paper describes some aspects of an advanced grid generation method used, with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) procedures, to model three-dimensional flow through screw compressors. The increased accuracy of the flow predictions thus derived, enable such machines to be designed with improved performance and for lower development costs. To achieve this, a wholly original boundary adaptation procedure has been developed, in order to allow for convenient mapping of the internal grid points of a screw compressor, which is sufficiently flexible to fit any arbitrary rotor profile. The procedure includes a practical transformation method, which adapts the computationally transformed region to produce a regular boundary distribution on the mesh boundaries. It also allows for subsequent generation of an algebraic grid, which enables the threedimensional domain of a screw compressor to be mapped regularly even in regions where the flow patterns are complex and the geometrical aspect ratio is high. This procedure enables more efficient use of a CFD solver for the estimation of the flow parameters within both oil free and oil injected screw compressors, with either ideal fluids or real fluids, with of without change of phase.

Performance Optimization of Screw Compressors Based on Numerical Investigation of the Flow Behavior Based on Different Grid Generation Approach
In the field of screw compressors, although the basic operation of flow systems is well known and the analytical methods for their performance prediction are well established, only few attempts of investigating the flow by means of CFD can be identified in the available literature. In this paper, two important aspects of numerical investigation of the flow behavior are presented. Firstly, metho...

One of the major factors affecting the performance prediction of twin screw compressors by use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is the accuracy with which the leakage gaps are captured by the discretization methods. The accuracy of mapping leakage flows can be improved by increasing the number of grid points on the profile. However, this method faces limitations when it comes to the comple...

An analysis of flow in rotary positive displacement machines has been carried out using a standard CFD package by separating out the motions of the fluid and the instantaneous volume in which it is contained. Examples are given of both twin screw and scroll compressors. Pressure-volume diagrams obtained from such analyses are compared with experimental results and good agreement shown. Longer t...

Modelling of screw compressors using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) offers better insight into the working chamber of twin screw machines when compared with chamber models. As shown by authors in earlier publications, CFD models predict performance of dry gas and refrigeration compressors fairly accurately. However numerical flow models used for modelling of oil flooded twin screw compresso...

Modern manufacturing methods enable screw compressors to be constructed to such close tolerances that full 3-D numerical calculation of the heat and fluid flow through them is required to obtain the maximum possible improvements in their design. An independent stand-alone CAD-CFD interface program has therefore been developed by the authors in order to generate a numerical grid for this purpose...
